Saffell House Funeral Home Obituaries

saffell house funeral home

The cost of operating a funeral home is factored into the cost as well. Funeral homes are a 24 hour operation, with extensive facilities that need to be maintained and secured. Once everything has been cleared with the proper authorities, the next call you place should be to a licensed funeral director.

Welcome to Saffell House Funeral Home

Space may be limited in a newspaper obituary, but you may include a little blurb on the life and legacy of the deceased. An online obituary or memorial website offers you the chance to add a lot more about the deceased. I had the unfortunate task of planning a funeral service for my mom. JD and his team did an excellent job guiding me and my brothers through the process and making it as easy as possible.

Making Arrangements

Mackenzie is a Funeral Director at Saffell House Funeral Home, where he shares in the operations of the business. He is currently working to obtain his insurance license to further his abilities and opportunities as a Pre-Planning Specialist where he will assist families in prearranging. Mackenzie is a third generation Funeral Home Owner/Director. A solid foundation is important in a families history in the funeral business. Saffell House Funeral Home is built off of a respectable history.

No amount of preparation can fully prepare you for the loss of a loved one. When you are in a heightened emotional state, even the most basic decisions can seem staggering. The following is a rough guideline of what needs to be done within the first 24 hours after death. In his spare time Brent enjoys collecting historical Anderson County memorabilia, being outdoors, studying history, and spending time with family and friends. Nathan graduated from Nelson County High School (Bardstown); and later moved to Lawrenceburg where he began his career in the funeral industry. He attended Mid- America College of Funeral Service where he graduated in 1997, and went on to complete his apprenticeship in Lawrenceburg in 1998.

Memories and Condolences for Jacqueline Hafen

We'll help you find the right words to comfort your family member or loved one during this difficult time. We are here to help, funeral directors are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. LAfS, My family experienced several deaths in the past few years. We can always count on the professional services provided by JD with Los Angeles Funeral services. He is experienced and cares about you and your families needs. Los Angeles Funeral Services was formed in 2006 to be a resource of providing dignified, memorable, and personalized funerals at a fair price and with personal attention unequaled to other mortuaries in Greater Los Angeles.

Mackenzie was born in Lawrenceburg, KY, where he is a lifelong resident and a 2012 graduate of Anderson County High School. He  furthered his education by attending Mid-America College of Funeral Service immediately after high school and graduating with the distinguished honor of valedictorian in 2014. A quiet, relaxing place can provide comfort during a difficult time of loss. Our front porch and outdoor patio areas are a place to take a private moment away from the group. His influence has helped to mold the heart of Saffell House Funeral Home  with compassion and love for families, and excellence in serving their needs. If you’re in charge of handling the affairs for a recently deceased loved one, this guide offers a helpful checklist.

If a funeral home has been provided to the hospital or nursing home, they will be notified at the time of death. If the person was not under hospice care, the police will have to be notified immediately. The police will be dispatched to the home and place the call to the coroner/medical examiner. From there the coroner/medical examiner will take the body and determine whether further action is necessary. The coroner/medical examiner must release the body before a funeral home can do anything. If the person was under hospice care, contact the hospice representative if they were not present and they will notify family members what the proper procedures are to follow.

A funeral director will guide you through all these steps, using your wants, needs and desires as a foundation to create a memorable funeral for your loved one. Recalling fond memories assists with the grieving process and will help honor the life of your loved one. Funerals are labor intensive and require a lot of work from a lot of people. Funeral directors work an average of 40 hours per funeral.

Funeral directors are in charge of all the logistics following a death. They complete all the necessary paperwork, make arrangements for the transportation of the body, and put into action the choices made by the family in regards to the funeral service and the final resting place of the body. Beyond the logistics, funeral directors are there to provide moral support and guidance for someone coping with death. It is highly recommended to have an obituary notice that’s either placed in a local newspaper, or placed online.

Welcome to Saffell House Funeral Home

He was a great mentor and inspiration to Nathan and Mackenzie; his dedication was to serve families in one of life's most difficult times with compassion and integrity. The cost of the funeral varies depending on the wishes you have. The average cost of a funeral is between $5,000-$7,000, however, the most basic of services can cost as little as $1000. The cost includes all professional services including transportation, embalming and other preparations, the use of a facility for the ceremony, and the purchase of a casket or urn. The Historic Saffell House has been restored into a piece of working history that the people of Lawrenceburg can share.

our services

However, some countries require embalming by law in order for remains to leave or enter the country. If it is not against your religious custom, embalming is recommended, especially if there is an extended gap between death and burial or cremation. This website is using a security service to protect itself from online attacks. The action you just performed triggered the security solution.

When death occurs at home or a place of business

Nathan is a second generation Funeral Home Owner/Director. Darrell is predeceased by his parents, Ernon Victor Burgin and Martha Orene Nation Burgin. Legacy's Linnea Crowther discusses how families talk about causes of death in the obituaries they write.

Darrell

We give every family options so they can make informed and reasonable choices. We welcome your phone call 24 hours a day, with absolutely no obligation. No matter if a death is sudden, or if it something that was a long time coming, the loss of a loved one makes us feel emotional and overwhelmed.

saffell house funeral home

There are no words that willhelp with the pain when you lose your mother. JB,Jimmy, Jason, Caitlin ,Jacob and family, you have my deepest sympathy. If someone has more history, stories, or pictures that they would be willing to share with us about the beautiful The Saffell House, please contact us. We would appreciate learning anything we can about the home that is such an important part of history in Lawrenceburg. After Mr. Saffell passed on, the home changed ownership and began its time as the Huddleston and Sparrow Funeral Home from about 1940—1960.

After years of use, the apartments began to fall into disarray. At this time, Lawrenceburg native, Mr. Sherrell Wells and his wife Brenda, purchased the property and began the process of restoring the home. Not only did they put a lot of effort into the main property, but they transformed the previous six car garage into three more apartments.

Funeral directors are here to help you obtain a death certificate, transport the body, and in the event pre-planning was not done, select a casket/urn and arrange the funeral/memorial service. The funeral director will also help you notify the employer and insurance company of the deceased to assist with those arrangements. Funeral directors are here to help and advise you and will work very hard to relieve the stress and logistics involved in funeral planning.

An obituary lets the public know that a death has occurred, and gives them information about the service. Obituaries generally include the deceased’s full name, age, city and date of birth and the city they were living in when they died. It also includes the name of the deceased’s spouse, along with the names of anyone else significant in their lives, such as parents, children or grandchildren.

Please feel free to browse our pages to learn more about pre-planning a funeral and grief support, as well as the traditional funeral and cremation services that we have to offer. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us at anytime, we are available by phone or e-mail, or drop by the office in person. Nathan's uncle and Mackenzie's great uncle, Marion "MH" Proffitt established that solid foundation. Began a funeral home in Bardstown, KY (M.H. Proffitt Funeral Home) with his wife, Deloris Proffitt, in the 1960's and served the community for over 20 years.

He has a daughter and son, Sarah Morris Howard and Joshua Morris (both of Winchester). In his spare time he enjoys traveling and NHRA/ IHRA/PDRA drag racing and occasionally a pit crew member for Don Hall  Racing. Nathan and his wife, Connie Ball Morris, reside in Georgetown where Nathan is a Deputy Coroner and business owner. He is  an active member of Central Church of Christ (Georgetown) and Georgetown Choral Society. Mackenzie is an active and lifelong member of the Overland Church of Christ (Lawrenceburg); he is also a member of the Rotary Club (Lawrenceburg Charter) where service over self is the motivation.

She was so compassionate and loving with me because I was having a difficult time. I really appreciate everything they did for my mom and my family. Of course you can, in fact more and more people are opting for a more non-traditional personalized service. There is no right or wrong way to celebrate somebody’s life. There are many unique ways to celebrate life, let the funeral director know exactly what your desires are and they will honor your wishes. A funeral is a ceremony for a deceased person prior to burial or cremation.

There are several actions that could trigger this block including submitting a certain word or phrase, a SQL command or malformed data. On May 1, 2015, Nathan Morris and his nephew, Mackenzie Morris, purchased the Saffell House from Mr. and Mrs. Wells with the intention of completely restoring and reopening the home to its former glory as a funeral home. By purchasing the building Nathan and Mackenzie also inherited an antique floor length mirror that was original to Cleveland Funeral Home in Mt. Eden. This mirror has found a permanent home at the Saffell House Funeral Home. It sits in our foyer as a reminder of the people before us, the history around us, and the future in front of us. Mackenzie is the son of Steve and Renee Whitehouse Morris, who are long time residents of Lawrenceburg.

The Huddlestons and the Sparrows worked in the original home of W.B. Saffell, but around 1956 the partners realized they needed more space. They added the huge chapel, and slowly added more living area on the second floor. He is a lifelong resident of Anderson County where he graduated High School in 1980 and is a member of the Sand Spring Baptist Church. Nathan has been serving the funeral industry for 20+ years. He is the lead Funeral Director at Saffell House Funeral Home, where he shares in the operations of the business.

Embalming sanitizes and preserves the body; it also slows down the decomposition process and enhances the appearance of the body damaged by traumatic death or illness. Embalming gives time to the family of the deceased to arrange a service, and allows the family the option of having an open-casket viewing. I recently used their services with the passing of my mother in August. The prices and services were wonderful and made this difficult time for our family so stress-free. I can't stress how thankful I am to La Funeral Services. It was at this time, the Saffell House was renovated into 7 beautiful apartments (three on the main floor and four on the second).

Community Service of Lament & Hope

christ episcopal church charlotte nc

The position calls for training and credentials in psychology, social work, counseling or psychiatric nursing, but rather than providing treatment, the director will triage parishioners to the right places for help. In addition to being on the church campus at least two Sundays a month, he or she will be available to respond to crises at any time. The roots of Christ Church’s mental health ministry trace back to the 2008 recession. Realizing that many in the congregation were having their lives turned upside down, the church organized a Sunday morning forum called “The Wisdom of Contentment” and invited members to come and share their struggles out loud. And most significantly, the church has begun a search for a wellness director, a new full-time position that will focus on mental health as part of a holistic understanding of what it means to be well. Sacred Ground is a resource coming out of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society.

A church invests in mental health in response to parishioners’ suffering

Suzanne teaches in large and small group settings including bible studies, discussion groups, and Faith Forum conversations, retreats, and pilgrimages. Joan received her Masters of Divinity degree from the University of the South School of Theology at Sewanee. She has extensive experience in parish ministry, previously serving as the Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Statesboro, Georgia.

Parishioners rose to tell their stories, not just about financial woes, but about their spiritual and emotional well-being — or lack of it. “God cares about human suffering and calls us to attend to those who suffer,” he said. Rite II – Uses modern language but retains the beautiful imagery of Rite I with more prayer options. Rite I – Uses Elizabethan English (i.e. thee, thy, thou) and hearkens back to the rich language of Thomas Cranmer, the original prayer book creator. Along with that parish work, he served as a convocational dean, on the Commission on Ministry for the Diocese of Atlanta, and on the faculty for “Learning to Lead,” the diocesan class for clergy in new positions. Teaching, vocational discernment, and learning alongside others are important to his work. The remarkable generosity of our parish enabled an outpouring of care for others, including a massive food drive, a mask ministry and care partnerships with those who were isolated.

In 2020, a world in crisis called us into new ways of being the church. We continued doing what we’ve always done--worshipping, praying, learning, supporting one another and loving our neighbors--but creatively reimagined, with a lot of flexibility, patience and love. The first wellness director, when he or she is hired, will serve as an advocate, educator and navigator for the congregation. Kinghorn said he is moved by Christ Church taking the step, unusual among congregations, of creating a suicide support group. His body was discovered the following Friday, about a 90-minute drive from Charlotte. The question posed in the Gospel of John — “Do you want to be made well?

Summer Service Schedule (Begins May

Our commitment to racial justice and reconciliation was strengthened as we witnessed the pain of our sisters and brothers of color. Jesus is our savior, but we were also saved by technology this year! Christ Church is currently offering one online service of prayer, hymns and a sermon, each Sunday at 9 a.m. Church leaders describe the new position as a ministry of presence, charged with addressing the array of issues that contribute to a person’s health — mental and otherwise. Today, the church refers families to HopeWay, and the facility’s medical staff has spoken at the church. The congregation has supported HopeWay financially, Blue said — including a grant to bring in Theo, a therapy dog.

Leadership is a gift from God, and can be expressed by all people in our church, regardless of sexual identity or orientation. Writing is a passion of Allen's, whether for sermons, articles, or the short novel he's been trying to finish for a few years. He also loves listening to all kinds of music, and like just about everyone on the planet, "Ted Lasso" has become a favorite show. He is a big fan of Liverpool Football Club in the English Premier League and is excited about Charlotte's very own MLS team! Allen and his wife, Casey, have two girls, Abby Grace (16) and Ila (12).

Ben has toured England, France, and the U.S. extensively with his choirs and as an organist. While at St. Peter’s he led the church through the design and acquisition of a new organ, C.B. He has served on the Board of Directors and led summer training courses for the Royal School of Church Music in America.

We seek to fulfill this vision by gathering to love God through our vibrant worship and by seeking to grow in our faith by engaging our hearts and mind in thoughtful, relevant education. We take seriously the call to create a safe community where all people are welcome, and where we can care for and support each other through all the passages of life. We are also deeply committed to serving and advocating for justice in our city, nation, and world. – Holy Eucharist Rite II (Church)This Rite II service, with contemporary language, has something for all ages including music, sermon and Holy Eucharist.

Nothing can separate us from the love of God, he said; there is grace and hope for those who die from suicide. It has helped one member establish a nonprofit residential mental health center and another launch a one-woman crusade to educate people about bipolar disorder. It has hosted two appearances by bestselling author Brené Brown to share her message that asking for help is a sign of strength. In addition to the SOS group, the church has invested in mental health support and awareness in a number of ways.

Katie resides in Charlotte with her husband Jonathan, son Austin, and two cats, Pop and Crackle. We are committed to being a loving community of support and spiritual growth; being faithful stewards of God’s many blessings; and using God’s gifts to serve the needs of our community and world. – Holy Eucharist Rite I (Church)A Rite I service, with traditional language, music, sermon and Holy Eucharist. – Holy Eucharist Rite I (Chapel)A concise Rite I service, with traditional language, sermon and Holy Eucharist, but no music.

Coping with suicide hasn’t been the only struggle for parishioners. Personal experience with mental illness has prompted two church members to action. While the trend is too new to be reflected in hard numbers, mental health advocates and faith leaders say that a growing number of houses of worship across the nation are ministering to those with mental health challenges. Few have discerned the church’s call to nurture body, soul and mind as dramatically as Christ Church. After graduating from Yale and Furman Universities with degrees in organ performance and music theory, Ben came to North Carolina to serve as Organist and Choirmaster at First Presbyterian Church in Belmont. In 1992, he became Director of Music and Organist at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where he was the Founding Director of The Choir School at St. Peter’s.

I paid extra to have more legroom and it is definitely worth it for a six hour flight. I would’ve paid for a decent dinner, but they didn’t offer anything but a snack box —not good for six hours. Crew were fine, drinks and snacks were as well but we were delayed for around 2 hrs which made our entry into Mexico delayed as well with the influx of arrivals at the same time. Very good other than we have to wait for one crew and we’re delayed and the pilot and his co- pilot has to make a difference to be right on time arrival. Disappointed about no food service also. Very disappointed about lack of electrical ports. There was enough time to hand out snacks to comfort + seats as was done for first class.

The Wi-Fi went out during the flight and there was only one plug for the devices every two seats. Three out of five surrounding my family did not work. The seats and spaces under them were so small I could not fit my backpack, which I’ve always brought on flights and fit before no problem. The crew were unpleasant and patronizing.

The Restaurants Behind Korean Barbecues Exciting Next Wave

It’s not just Annandale—it’s [Anju chef] Angel Barreto doing his amazing work and what’s happening throughout the city. The Korean minimalist cake trend has jumped beyond Korean bakers to bakers of Asian heritage — especially in Los Angeles. Domi, a pop-up bakery owned by pastry chefs Evelyn Ling and Joe Cheng Reed, also makes charming minimalist bento cakes in Asian-inspired flavors, something the pair added to their menu during the pandemic. The cakes at Harucake might be minimalist in nature, but they are not minimalist in price, with slices going for around $15, standard full cakes retailing for $70 and lunchbox cakes retailing for $30. “But we only use the best ingredients.” Even though the bakery now has a staff of 15, she still personally shops for the organic dairy it uses and spends extra money on a super fine flour that helps create the texture she loves. Whether you’re looking for an all-you-can-eat feast, galbi galore, a duck specialist or a full-on seafood spread, Koreatown has all the Korean barbecue you could wish for.

The best Chinese restaurants in Los Angeles

From the Korean-speaking staff to the tried-and-true dishes, Ja Ga Chi offers an immersive eating experience. Fresh bibimbap with spicy chicken that you can actually taste some of the spicy. Fried dishes are culinary gold, and every bite has a heavenly crunch. The restaurant is humble and inviting in size and makes for memorable Friday evenings out. Although we primarily used TripAdvisor and Yelp for referencing the general ratings for these Korean barbecue spots, we also made sure that they have similar reviews on other reputable sites. On top of this “obvy” rigorous sourcing criteria, we’ve made sure only to add Korean meat houses of the highest quality.

It also adds to the nice crunch inside the ssam, if you choose to make them.

Most Korean BBQ restaurants specialize in just one type or cut of meat, most popularly pork belly, galbi, or bulgogi. So in the US we're quite spoiled for choice, both at KBBQ spots and when preparing KBBQ at home. If you’re looking to liven up your barbecue without marinating, this savory sauce is the perfect choice.

Today there’s no shortage of barbecue restaurants in the country, especially Seoul — though there’s plenty of mediocre barbecue too, so it’s good to know what to look for. After eating KBBQ in Korea, my co-workers always told me that the meal isn't complete unless you enjoy a bowl of rice or stew afterwards, preferably dubu jjigae (tofu stew). I was always too full, but occasionally I would indulge in my favorite cold noodle soup alongside the piping hot grilled meat. Prepare to break the bank if you order chadolbaegi, because it is thinner than bulgogi, but has a heavier marbling than most meat cuts.

From there, other forms of gogi gui (meat grilling) emerged, like the popular samgyeopsal (pork belly) and spicy dakgalbi (diced chicken bits). These come with various side dishes called ban chan, which depend on the season but usually include kimchi, gyeran jjim (steamed egg in hot pot), and oyi namul (stir-fried cucumbers). While dishes like gimbap, and tteokbokki are dominating the street food scene, sticky sweet Korean fried chicken and fare like bulgogi and galbi are probably more familiar to you. For those of us who love marinated meats and controlling the cook of our cuts, Korean BBQ is the promised land. With a palatial, patently luxurious feel to the dining room and a roomy outdoor patio, Chosun Galbee is our other favorite Korean barbecue restaurant for special occasions. For over two decades, this classic Koreatown restaurant has offered smokeless grills, attentive service (something you can’t find at every KBBQ spot) alongside a high-quality meat selection.

With Harucake, You highlights and celebrates the Korean flavors she was raised on. “My goal is to make Americans fall in love with Korean cakes,” she says. With a perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and savory notes, these ribs are sure to be a hit at your next gathering.

The space is modern and comfortable to go along with the concise menu. If you’re not familiar with gopchang, start with the modeum hanpan, an assorted platter with four different cuts of intestine, each prepared separately according to its characteristics and served on one sizzling plate. I’m no Korean chef, but with my experience with KBBQ, I’ve realized that there are three types of sauces often offered alongside Korean grilled meats. These are all combined in differing ratios to make various kinds of dipping sauces; feel free to experiment until you find the flavors you like most. Galbi is a rich, often marinated cut of meat, and one of the most popular meats for Korean barbecue.

The team behind Michelin-recognized Liu’s Cafe opens an ode to modern Korean favorites

Do not skip the siksa after dinner; R Gogi’s beefy off-menu rendition of omurice is a cult favorite. After grilling, the pork belly is usually cut into small pieces and eaten with pajeori (Korean green onion salad), ssamjang (spicy dipping sauce), and grilled kimchi in a lettuce wrap. Best known for marinated galbi, Byeokje Galbi has been a quintessential, high-end Korean barbecue house since 1986. For years, they have sourced the highest-quality hanwoo beef from daily auctions, with the price tag to match.

This family-owned restaurant is one of Oahu’s best local Korean BBQ spots and has a warm, welcoming environment for all its customers. Our grill-top BBQ experience is perfect for a date or a big family dinner. All of our waiters and kitchen staff work as one big team, we are dedicated to great service and providing you with even better food, whether you need a hand picking the right kind of food or soju... The pandemic was a bleak and dreary period for all of us, but in Korea locals found a way to recreate their favorite group dinner activity in their very own home. This is a traditional Korean alcohol made from wild raspberries; it’s sweet and tart – which is why most classify this as a dessert wine.

Other beef cuts like the ribs were not thrown away, but served raw and cooked individually on tabletop grills as galbi instead. Many Korean barbecue restaurants often feature built-in grills located in the center of the tables, which allow diners to cook their own food right at the table. This design highlights the communal nature of the Korean dining culture. By cooking the food at the table, it enables a more interactive and enjoyable dining experience with friends and family. Though Korean donkatsu sprung from Japanese tonkatsu, it has become entirely its own dish over the years. The Japanese version is often served with a thick curry-based sauce or tonkatsu sauce, while the Korean-style cutlet served at Lasung is much thinner, with a slightly sweet tomato-based sauce on top.

"It's about eating the meat off the grill while having conversations, ordering some beer and Soju," he added. "It's like a backyard barbecue you'd have with your friends, but you're having it in the restaurant." Kim said most Korean barbecue chefs won't cook the meat from start to finish, letting customers take over grilling responsibilities as part of the "traditional custom." But at Baekjeong, things are done a bit differently.

Sorry, I didn’t mean to throw such a pretentious oxymoron your way, but the modest Mikawon deserves the praise. Sura offers an authentic Korean BBQ experience that naturally intersects with the Hawaiian way of life with inviting smiles. I am positive your conversation over the sizzle of your table’s grill will oil your heart in the best of ways. Consider this guide a starting point as you eat your way around Seoul. The list includes some timeless classics mixed with some hotshot newcomers everyone is talking about. No matter where you pick, be prepared to wait in line, as most restaurants don’t take reservations.

We have dedicated family seating section towards the back of the restaurant. Here you get to cook meat together, share conversation to get to know each other more, and drink ‘til dawn. If you’re in Korea or an authentic Korean restaurant, upon arrival, check if you can open your seat or take off the lid. Soju is what makes the Korean dining experience ten times more exciting, especially in larger gatherings. Through soju, people introduce drinking games, which are also a good icebreaker if you run out of things to bring up with coworkers.

Table Top BBQ

Whether it’s beef, chicken, or pork, there’s a variety of red and white meats available that can make for a delicious Korean barbecue experience. And in recent years, there’s been a reconsidering of Korean barbecue, with some Korean Americans giving it more meticulous treatment through experiences that represent a stark contrast to the typically rowdy and hefty feast. Koreatown’s top-notch seafood-oriented KBBQ joint pays homage to the East China Sea by serving its edible bounty in waves at the table. Go with one of the bang-for-your-buck combo sets—even the basic A set is enough to feed a family—which begin with airy steamed egg, crisp-edged scallion pancakes, sizzling cheese corn and a heaping bowl of chili-packed mussel soup.

The restaurant feels like a nightclub

Grabbing pork belly KBBQ is the perfect group activity, especially if all of you have empty stomachs, this is an affordable and easy-to-find option whenever you’re out and about in Seoul. Dak galbi is quite cheap and is a hundred times better than the fried chicken + beer combo (chimaek) for those of us who crave a bit of veg. The creamy, cheesy sauce you end up with is a fantastic flavor combination.

Other than these two things, here are three important things to keep in mind before prepping Korean BBQ at home. Eggplants are a hit or miss, and even if you happen to be one of the people who loathe this vegetable, this recipe might change your mind. This delicious summer side dish requires a slender eggplant with a rich purple color and shiny skin; other varieties won’t do. The presence of this ban chan automatically makes any experience “Korean,” and locals swear by its health benefits and anti-aging properties.

More from Food

While it seems like an indoor twist to a favorite Western outdoor gathering, typical KBBQ goes back thousands of years. A traditional Korean BBQ setup will use a charcoal grill, though in the US most restaurants use gas grills, and that's by far the easiest to use when learning how to make KBBQ at home. This is because it's inexpensive to dine out and unusual to invite friends home.

Our Menu

After years of cooking in some of New York City's top kitchens, including Jean-Georges and The Modern, chef Samuel Kim wanted an opportunity that would bring him closer to the Korean food he grew up with. Although popular, it’s not so easy to find Korean BBQ that’s truly reminiscent of authentic Seoul’s best. Honolulu does rise to the challenge and has many good Korean BBQ spots, but it takes a sharp sense to separate the good from the best Korean BBQ spots here.

How much has Korean food across the country actually changed in the years since your last book came out?

For a successful Korean BBQ night, prepare ahead of time by marinating your meats (if you are using marinated meat). Don’t forget to also prepare staple side dishes, such as kimchi, pickled radish and sauces. You can either make these yourself or purchase them from a local Korean grocer. Chadol Baegi (차돌박이, Brisket) – This non-marinated, super-thin cut of beef cooks very quickly. A popular way to eat it is by dipping it in a savory salt, pepper, and sesame oil dipping sauce. It can become tough and chewy easily if overcooked, so be careful not to overcook it.

When he initially opened AB Steak in Los Angeles right before the pandemic shutdowns in 2020, it offered a more Westernized approach, with bread and cheese on the menu. It’s a really classic story in Korean communities, having a second generation restaurant. The range of cakes they’re doing there—the layer cakes and the slices of cake wrapped in plastic—and the yeast buns, and there’s bingsoo there too.

From there, DIY grill options include sea scallops and mussels on the half shell, large shell-on shrimp, spicy chili salad, octopus tentacles and more. Upgrade to a B or C set to feast on rarer delights like abalone, which squirm in their shells before yielding tender meat when cooked. Step up your game with the D combo for selections from clams, oysters, a spicy cold seafood bowl and more. This ground floor restaurant at the Beverly Center offers an elevated take on Korean barbecue, complete with dry-aged steaks, top shelf cocktails and elements of a traditional American steakhouse. For a boozy spectacle, order the Hennessey-based Side Car Pop, which comes topped with a translucent bubble of St-Germain liqueur. This locally owned soondubu haven is situated right in the thick of things.

Personally, I prefer my meat sliced thin because it sears nicely & quickly on the grill, and the resulting marbling makes the cut tender and flavorful. The best thing about KBBQ at home leaves  is that it you with plenty of cuts to choose from. Whether you prefer pork, beef, or chicken, you have the power to choose how thin and tender you want your slices to be (almost any Korean BBQ restaurant in the US and in Korea can cook it for you). This results in maekjeok, a dish believed to be the inspiration behind the famous Korean bulgogi, or thin slices of flavorful beef, which are usually grilled but can also be stir-fried.

Additionally, if you feel like recreating K-BBQ at home, this is the kind of cut that is cheaper to buy in the supermarket and online stores like Coupang! Also don’t forget to buy your favorite KBBQ saucesand various leafy vegetables to use as your ssam for a more authentic samgyeopsal experience. Unfortunately, when the pandemic hit, public gatherings were discouraged.

Contrasting the old, worn-out appearance of the restaurant, the crowd is always a mix of hipsters and Itaewon clubbers, with a few celebrities thrown in. Once considered passe, naengsam (frozen pork belly) is staging a bit of a comeback, and many would credit Jamsugyo-jip. Shortly after opening its first location at Bogwang-dong, Jamsugyo-jip quickly expanded to nearly a dozen outposts throughout Seoul — though whichever branch you hit, you can’t escape the line. The charm of Jamsugyo-jip is in the side dishes, served on retro-style serveware. On top of the complimentary banchan, there are also lots of choices for supplements like minari and fresh oysters.

Their menu is primarily set around soondubu, but their meat cuts make visiting them necessary whenever you’re around the neighborhood. This wildly popular South Korean fast food chain with locations in Pearland, Katy, and Sugar Land, specializes in fried chicken. But the menu features a massive collection of Korean comfort eats too. Find bibimbap, Korean-style tacos, tteokbokki, and udon, and save room for mochi in flavors like Thai tea and raspberry crunch.

Columbia University president testifies before House committee

house hearings today

As the House select committee on Jan. 6 holds its first hearing, we revisit the events of that day — who said what, and what happened when. People across the country are gathering at watch parties and warming up their TVs ahead of tonight's Jan. 6 committee hearing, the first of several scheduled for this month and — as far as we know — the only one taking place during prime time. The committee will hold six hearings, where it intends to detail a conspiracy by Donald Trump to overturn the election that ultimately led to a violent insurrection meant to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 election results.

Investigations into Columbia

“January 6th and the lies that led to insurrection have put two and a half centuries of constitutional democracy at risk. He kept the authoritarian leaders of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela off the invite list — a move that resulted in other leaders deciding not to come, in protest. Jan. 6 was a "sprawling multistep conspiracy aimed at overturning the election, aimed at overturning the votes of millions of Americans," Thompson said. As officers and protesters grappled over the bike racks, she remembers feeling one come on top of her head and pushing her backwards. Her foot caught on one of the concrete stairs behind her and her chin hit the handrail, at which point she lost consciousness and her head hit the stairs.

In 1876, the result of the election was uncertain almost until Inauguration Day, which was in early March back then. To reach a resolution, a long-simmering debate over the future of Reconstruction was put on the table. When Reconstruction was ended in exchange for the presidency, the election was resolved, and the victor, Rutherford B. Hays, assumed the presidency with a margin of one electoral vote.

Massad is still listed as chair of the Academic Review Committee on a Columbia site. In a prior line of questioning Shafik said that "he is no longer chair of that committee and does not have a leadership role." She declined to say if any further disciplinary actions were taken but said he has "not repeated anything like that ever since." She confirmed Massad is still on the Columbia faculty but was unsure if he's currently teaching. Columbia's president, Minouche Shafik, said Massad had been "spoken to" by members of his department of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies.

DC police officer explains why he is referring to the Jan. 6 rioters as "terrorists"

Last week, Weiss used that new authority to indict Hunter Biden on federal firearms charges, putting the case on track toward a possible trial as the 2024 election looms. Democrats labored to undermine what they see as Republican misinformation in their ongoing defense of Trump, who is now the Republican front-runner to challenge Biden in next year’s election. They say Republicans are trying to detract attention from the indicted former president’s legal challenges and turn a negative spotlight on Biden. Weiss, since 2018, has overseen the day-to-day running of the probe and another special counsel, Jack Smith, is in charge of the Trump investigation, though Garland retains final say on both as attorney general. Asked by Republican Rep. Dan Bishop of North Carolina whether he had tried to figure out if Weiss was facing any hurdles in bringing charges against the president’s son, Garland said he had purposely kept his distance to keep a promise not to interfere. She said the group has already drafted language that would make clear that the vice president's role is ministerial in the process of counting Electoral College votes.

It also played video of her being violently slammed to the ground by protesters breaking through a barrier outside of the Capitol, knocking her unconscious — the first of several injuries she sustained that day. Several GOP figures turned turned to Fox News and other sympathetic media to make their case — as Fox's main cable news channel opted not to air the hearing in full, as other networks did. In most cases they didn't offer rebuttals to the specific claims or evidence offered during the nighttime hearing.

What happens after the Jan. 6 hearings are over?

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin asked DC police officer Daniel Hodges about why he is repeatedly referring to the Jan. 6 rioters as "terrorists" during his hearing testimony today. In his opening remarks, Rep. Bennie Thompson, chair of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection, called the attack that day a "culmination of an attempted coup." House Republicans have repeatedly said the select committee is "ignoring" relevant questions about security decisions that were not made before Jan. 6 and the lack of communication and coordination across federal agencies to anticipate possible trouble and violence. The widows of Capitol police officers Howard Liebengood and Jeff Smith, who both died by suicide following the Capitol attack, will be in attendance at Thursday night's hearing.

"I am not satisfied with where Columbia is," board co-chair says

The video included a brief interview with one of the men who breached the Capitol. "I had been called names before, but never had my patriotism or duty been called into question," Edwards said. She also used her remarks to praise Rep. Liz Cheney for speaking up against Trump. “Prior to Jan. 6 were you asked or instructed by President Trump to take any action at the department to advance election fraud claims or to seek to overturn any part of the 2020 election results? "There's a difference between marching the Capitol and assaulting the capitol. That's the delineation I'm trying to make, despite the partisan attack that I was just subjected to," Miller said later. "For your written testimony for today – for today, this morning, you stated the following about the President, quote, I personally believe his comments encouraged the protesters that day," Lynch said.

Meanwhile, thousands of Donald Trump supporters gathered near the White House to hear him speak at noon. It's one of the signs that the committee is hoping to draw and captivate as large an audience as possible. Plus, as Axios first reported, it even enlisted the help of former ABC News President James Goldston to produce the hearing "as if it were a blockbuster investigative special."

"Donald Trump was at the center of that conspiracy. And ultimately, Donald Trump, the president of the United States, spurred a mob of domestic enemies of the Constitution to march down to the Capitol and subvert American democracy,” Thompson said. Thompson also pointed to the former president as the center of the conspiracy that the 2020 election was stolen from him. The clip was the first time the committee presented any testimony from Ivanka Trump, though more is expected. In fact, she cited testimony from administration staff who were in the West Wing on Jan. 6 saying that Trump was yelling and angry at advisers who told him he needed to take action to quell the violence. Towards the end of her opening remarks, Rep. Liz Cheney offered a stark message to members of her party who continue to support former President Donald Trump and downplay the events of Jan. 6.

Gore conceded and George W. Bush assumed the presidency, though the traumas of that recount have infected much of the "rigged" election rhetoric – from both the left and the right – ever since. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln wasn't even on distributed ballots in ten southern states. Lincoln assumed the presidency amid the creation of a breakaway country, the Confederate States of America.

GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia called him a coward as he left during her remarks. Democratic lawmakers argued that Biden, who has refused to testify to the panel behind closed doors, should be allowed to speak publicly. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republicans on Wednesday took the first step toward holding Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for defying a congressional subpoena. They advanced the charge to a full House vote just hours after the president’s son sparked a momentary political frenzy by appearing in the front row for part of the debate.

Four officers who responded on Jan. 6 died by suicide within seven months of the attack. Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chairman of the House select committee, asked the four officers testifying at the hearing today what they want the committee to uncover in their investigation. Fanone also described his experience on Jan. 6 and walked lawmakers through the violent footage captured on his body camera that shows rioters attacking him. "But yet they tortured me. They beat me. I was struck with a taser device at the base of my skull numerous times. And they continued to do so, until I yelled out that I have kids," the officer said.

Shafik repeatedly said that education was key, and she vowed to include lessons on antisemitism at orientations for new students. Shafik replied that she would "like to confirm that" and she was "not sure" if he had been removed. On my watch, for faculty who make remarks that cross the line in terms of antisemitism, there will be consequences,” Shafik said. Rep. Elise Stefanik said Columbia hired Mohamed Abdou as a professor after the terror attack even though she said he posted support for Hamas, Hezbollah and the Islamic Jihad on October 11. Columbia University President Minouche Shafik said the school is firing a professor who allegedly expressed support for Hamas on social media following the October 7 terror attack on Israel. Davidai called Shafik a “coward” in a fiery speech last year criticizing the university president for failing to quiet “pro-terror” voices at the school.

He said he is frustrated that there are still not a lot of answers about what happened that day, saying it is because Republicans have "treated this as just another partisan fight." The high-profile committee's first hearing was filled with emotional moments and first-hand accounts of the violence on the Capitol that day. Lawmakers heard accounts from four officers that defended the building on Jan. 6 — DC Metropolitan Police Officers Daniel Hodges and Michael Fanone and Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn and Sgt. Aquilino Gonell. The House select subcommittee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection has scheduled its first hearing on what it has learned so far for prime time — for a reason.

If Trump has his way, staging coups and ordering murders could be immune from prosecution. Democratic-appointed justices pressed his lawyer, John Sauer, on those hypotheticals at Thursday’s hearing. Incredibly, Sauer said they might qualify as “official acts” that are off-limits for prosecutors.

Sandra Garza, the partner of late Officer Brian Sicknick, who died on Jan. 7, 2021, after engaging with rioters, has arrived at the hearing. She  was accompanied by members of the Capitol police, including Capitol police officer Harry Dunn, as well as retired Metropolitan PD officer Michael Fanone. "Not only did President Trump refuse to tell the mob to leave the Capitol, he placed no call to any element of the United States government to instruct that the Capitol be defended," Cheney said. In a statement issued late Thursday night, Trump called the select committee members "political hacks" and accused them of not playing "any of the many positive witnesses and statements" during the hearing. "At no point that day did I ever think about the politics of that crowd, even the things that were being said did not resonate in the midst of that chaos. But what did resonate was the fact that thousands of Americans were attacking police officers who were simply doing their job," Fanone said. Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chair of the Jan. 6 select committee, vowed to the officers who testified that they would get answers about what happened during the insurrection.

The committee's chairman, Rep. Bennie Thompson, will deliver an opening statement insisting the attack on the Capitol was an "attempt to undermine the will of the people." Cheney detailed the committee's plans to examine the legal strategy underpinning Trump's efforts to overturn the election results, specifically the work of conservative attorney John Eastman, a professor who crafted a plan for Pence to reject states' electoral votes. The committee is planning several more hearings this month to continue laying out the findings of the 11-month investigation. Committee chair Rep. Bennie Thompson and vice chair Rep. Liz Cheney in their extraordinary opening statements detailed how many Trump administration officials themselves did not believe the former president's baseless claims of a stolen election. Miller emphasized that the military must play a "subordinate role" when it comes to troops needed to get involved in domestic situations to support local law enforcement agencies.

Our country has had angry public fights over contested presidential elections before. House lawmakers escalated efforts to restrict video-sharing platform TikTok, renewing pressure on the Senate by advancing a bill Saturday that would force the company to be sold or face a national ban as part of a broader package sending aid to Israel and Ukraine. Four Columbia University officials, including the university’s president and the leaders of its board, went before Congress on Wednesday to try to extinguish criticism that the campus in New York has become a hub of antisemitic behavior and thought. Rep. Suzanne Bonamici asked Columbia President Minouche Shafik, board co-chairs David Greenwald and Claire Shipman and David Schizer, co-chair of a task force on antisemitism, for a simple yes or no response. All four said “yes,” calls for the genocide of Jews would violate Columbia’s code of conduct. The arrival of the president’s son at the Oversight Committee, which has been engaged in a yearlong probe, sitting in the audience with his legal team, including attorney Abbe Lowell, sent the panel into chaos.

While the Democratic-led House select committee was laying out its findings on the Capitol insurrection, Republican leaders were again blasting the panel — and trying to change the subject. In opening statements, committee members have put former President Donald Trump squarely at the center of a conspiracy over election fraud that led to the deadly riot that day. At the end of Wednesday's hearing, Foxx left open the possibility that the committee would convene another hearing centered on Columbia. She told school officials, "We are prepared to bring you back if we don't see more tangible progress." Columbia is under investigation by the House Education Committee for "the inadequacy of Columbia's response to antisemitism on its campus," according to a letter the committee sent to the school.

The committees’ votes Wednesday on contempt of Congress come a day before Hunter Biden is scheduled to make his first court appearance on tax charges filed by a special counsel in Los Angeles. He is facing three felony and six misdemeanor counts, including filing a false return, tax evasion, failure to file and failure to pay. One Republican Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, insisted that Hunter Biden be quickly arrested.

"All [Democrats] are doing is trying to paint a new political narrative ... because the Democrat agenda has failed," Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds said on Fox News in a video clip that was shared by former President Donald Trump's political action committee. Aispuro, who has been with the department for 19½ years, put out an emergency broadcast that included a description of the Camry, Luna said. That led authorities to a house in La Puente, where several people were detained but not arrested, and ultimately released, Luna said. “Based on statements, security camera video in West Covina, witness statements and the firearm recovered by CHP, detectives strongly believe Raymundo Duran is the suspect in the shooting of our deputy,” Luna said.

"We're deeply disturbed by what we're seeing at Columbia, any of the things we've heard in today's hearing," US Rep. Virginia Foxx said. While Republicans say their inquiry is ultimately focused on the president, they have taken particular interest in Hunter Biden and his overseas business dealings, questioning whether the president profited from that work. He added, “There is no fairness or decency in what these Republicans are doing — they have lied over and over about every aspect of my personal and professional life — so much so that their lies have become the false facts believed by too many people. Shelving the contempt of Congress charges would likely further stoke conservative criticism that the Justice Department is politicized — especially given that two one-time advisers to former President Donald Trump were prosecuted for contempt of Congress by the Biden administration. If the contempt referral against Hunter Biden passes the full House it would be yet another challenge for federal prosecutors already under heavy scrutiny for their handling of charges against him related to his taxes and gun use.

Columbia President Shafik condemns professor who praised October 7 attack

"January 6 was the culmination of an attempted coup. A brazen attempt, as one rioter put it shortly after January 6, to overthrow the government. The violence was no accident." Barr said he couldn't live in a world where an incumbent administration stays in power based on "unsupported by specific evidence that there was fraud in the election." Cheney said testimony will also show that Trump refused for hours to instruct his supporters to stand down and leave the Capitol.

There are hundreds of still-unidentified photographs of rioters on the FBI's "most wanted" website, indicating that plenty of people who stormed the Capitol haven't been charged yet — and that the unprecedented investigation continues. In an exchange with Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch, the lawmaker asked about remarks Miller made earlier this year to Vice saying he believed Trump's speech on the morning of Jan. 6 incited the rioters who stormed the US Capitol. “Outright propaganda and lies are being used to unleash the national security state against law-abiding US citizens, especially Trump voters,” Gosar said. “In my career as a judge and in law enforcement, I have not seen a more dangerous threat to democracy than the invasion of the Capitol,” Garland said.

Edwards still hasn't been able to return to her regular duties prior to Jan. 6, 2021, after she was injured by rioters. "I was called a lot of things on January 6, 2021, and the days thereafter," she said, including "Nancy Pelosi's dog," a "traitor," a "hero," and a "villain." U.S. Capitol Police Officer Caroline Edwards recalled how her patriotism was called into question on Jan. 6, 2021, and in the days after. Filmmaker and documentarian Nick Quested told the committee he was "confused" that a couple hundred Proud Boys members were marching in the direction of the Capitol before Trump even began speaking.

But in all these contested elections, the president or nominee never called the election or the process illegitimate. The president or nominee never assailed the process before the election began (as Trump did) and never sought to mobilize public opinion against the very procedures that elected the eventual winner. In 2000, Florida gripped the nation as a recount tried to assess obvious questions about voter intent in some counties.

TikTok has blasted lawmakers’ efforts to potentially ban the app as an affront on free speech and disputes lawmakers’ suggestions that it is beholden to China or any government. The Senate plans to take the matter up Tuesday, Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said in a statement emailed to The Post. TikTok is “a spy balloon in Americans’ phones” used to “surveil and exploit America’s personal information,” Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Tex.), chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said Saturday as he introduced the measure for debate. The unorthodox maneuver could expedite the crackdown’s path through Congress, where negotiations had slowed after an earlier attempt hurtled through the House last month. With growing support in the Senate, the legislation appears more likely than ever to become law. The topic surfaced early in Wednesday’s hearing about Columbia, and the Columbia witnesses did not hesitate when they answered.

The conservative network announced Tuesday that the cable channel will only cover the hearings “as news warrants,” but the proceedings will be livestreamed on the network’s other outlets such as Fox Business and Fox Nation. Lawmakers on the committee, however, have stressed in recent days that the hearings will provide dramatic and “disturbing” new evidence around what took place leading up to Jan. 6. "We are in fact in a situation where he continues to use even more extreme language, frankly, than the language that caused the attack," Cheney said Sunday. "And so, people must pay attention. People must watch, and they must understand how easily our democratic system can unravel if we don't defend it."

Capitol kicked off the first in a series of public hearings with never-before-seen footage from the attack that day as well as clips of videotaped testimony from some of people in former President Donald Trump's orbit, including his daughter Ivanka Trump. The hearings might lead the House committee to recommend more criminal charges, says William Banks, a professor of law and public policy at Syracuse University. But any actions the DOJ may take in the aftermath of the hearings and the committee's report on the investigation could take time. Rep. Bennie Thompson, the chair of the Jan. 6 committee, spoke to reporters after the panel's first hearing wrapped. Lawmakers heard from four police officers who tried to defend the US Capitol during the riot. The prime time hearing of the House select committee on the Jan. 6 Capitol attack ended with a video montage of various rioters saying why they showed up to try to stop Congress from certifying the 2020 election results.

But the main theme of the hearing was detailing the chaos and violence of Jan. 6, 2021. Cheney said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy texted Trump family members and told them he was "scared" about what was happening. Miller also told the committee that there are “complexities to redeploying forces in an urban environment" that also played a role.

The officers were part of the Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force, an operation that draws from 16 agencies, including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the state corrections department. “The last few days has been very tough,” Chief Johnny Jennings of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said at a news conference on Tuesday, pausing to collect himself and wipe tears from his eyes. The killing of the four officers in a usually quiet neighborhood, where a running gun battle left people scrambling for cover, stunned residents and brought anguish across the city.

Many roads in the area, including Interstate 77, were closed so ambulances could get to hospitals faster. TV footage showed ambulances speeding to hospitals with several law enforcement vehicles in front and behind them, sirens blaring. Four Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers who responded to the scene were also shot while trying to rescue the wounded officers.

Grief-stricken members of the community filed into a local church Tuesday night to honor the four fallen law enforcement officers killed in an ambush at an east Charlotte home the day before. "We are getting a close look this morning of the East Charlotte home where four law enforcement officers were shot and killed yesterday morning," WSOC-TV reporter Eli Brand shared. "You can see the damage caused by an armored truck police used to breach inside."

At the McAlway Manor Condominiums complex in the 900 block of McAlway Road in southeast Charlotte. The president also spoke with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles to express his condolences and support for the community. A manned Concord Police Department cruiser idled outside a two story home early Tuesday afternoon at an address in Monroe listed for Eyer. Concord Officer Thiago DeSouza, stationed outside the gray-paneled house, walked past three cars sitting in the driveway to knock on the grieving family’s door.

Hughes was then arrested in June 2012 after a high-speed chase. Los Angeles police officers were called to the intersection of Rinaldi Street and Shoshone Avenue just before 1 a.m. And found a 19-year-old man suffering from several gunshot wounds. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Tuesday that California Highway Patrol officers had arrested a gang member in San Onofre who shot a deputy in the back as he sat on his department motorcycle at a West Covina stoplight. A teenage girl and a man were treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds at the scene, according to the Tucson Police Department, the Arizona Wildcat, the university’s campus newspaper, reported.

"Today we say our prayers as we get through this difficult time." The four law enforcement personnel killed in the incident were identified as Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks Jr., 48; North Carolina Department of Adult Correction veterans Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott; and CMPD officer Joshua Eyer. He said an armored vehicle was subsequently parked between the house and the wounded officers to serve as protection during a rescue attempt. After a three-hour standoff, the home was torn open by specialty vehicles.

Jennings said he was killed while responding to others who were facing gunfire at the scene. Hughes was also wanted for two counts of felony flee to elude out of Lincoln County, North Carolina, according to Charlotte police. They said two persons of interest, a 17-year-old and a woman, were taken to the police station for further investigation. Alexis Piquero, a professor of criminology at the University of Miami who has researched crime and justice policy, said that when officers serve warrants at homes, “they have no idea what is on the other side” of a door. With the proliferation of high-powered rifles across the country, he said, the dangers for such operations have only increased. The task force that was serving the warrant on Monday had received training in a variety of matters over the years, according to Ronald L. Davis, the director of the U.S.

Todd Ishee, NC Secretary of Adult Correction, identified the two officers killed as Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, both 14-year NC Department of Adult Correction veterans. Marshals Service confirmed that one of its officers had been killed. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper clarified that the other two killed were officers with the State Department of Adult Correction who were working with the task force. CMPD officers Christopher Tolley, Michael Giglio and Jack Blowers were treated for gunshot wounds.

The officers were first shot at by the wanted suspect as they approached the suburban home in Charlotte, and they killed him in the front yard, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings said. "After that, it was just chaos," Wilson told the station. The Marshals Service identified the deputy U.S. marshal who was killed in the shooting as Thomas Weeks Jr., 48.

"Unfortunately today was something tragic that we never want to see," Jennings said. Jennings earlier said that all of the officers are expected to make a full recovery. Jennings said the suspect used an AR-15-style rifle and a .40-caliber handgun and had additional ammunition for both guns. “This is a good example of what we try to tell people every single day that when we put on this uniform, we don’t have any guarantees that we’ll return home,” Jennings said.
